All In London Review

Unfussy, inexpensive Lebanese

Camden’s Parkway has a varied selection of restaurants, from the excellent modern British food of Market to the classic Italian Trattoria Lucca, Indian chain offering Masala Zone or budget Japanese Bento Ramen. Amongst these sits Mezza Express, a Lebanese takeaway and eat-in restaurant that’s easy on the pocket.

Middle Eastern restaurants are not renowned for their wine selection, therefore it’s surprising to find Pouilly-Fuisse and Sancerre here, and most wines are priced around £15 to £20. The food menu has both hot and cold mezze, so we start with lemony charcoal-grilled chicken wings, grilled creamy Halloumi slices and spicy sojok, tasty little lamb sausages cooked in garlic and tomato which we order as a replacement for kebeh, the herby lamb tartare that they’ve run out of. A basket of warm bread is also brought to the table.

The main dishes are large, with mountains of white rice and salad. The roasted chicken chawarma is fragrant and juicy, having been marinaded in lemon juice, garlic and spices; less successful is the kebbeh bissaynieh, a large cracked wheat and minced lamb parcel which lacks flavour and is served with a dollop of bland yogurt.

It’s nothing to write home about aesthetically, nor is it going to win awards for culinary innovation or fast service, but if it’s inexpensive Lebanese fare you’re after (a meal for two including wine is around £50 - £60) Mezza Express will fit the bill.

Very friendly & satisfactory service. The food is authentic Lebanese cuisine & is most delicious. I recommend the £10 buffet lunch as there is a wide mezze choice as well as a selection of hot dishes. My favourite aubergine dip, moutabel, wasn't in the mezze but I was given a dish, as well as a dish of tabboulleh.
There's a wide a la carte selection available which is fresh & reasonably priced.
I'll certainly be going back!
