All In London Review

It may not be 'nice', it may not be special but you must respect the kind of night that the Dolphin consistently offers.

There are times in your life that you remember vividly. They’re not necessarily happy times or particularly noteworthy events but you remember them all the same. These are what we imagine as The Dolphin times. Almost every East Londoner of a certain age will have visited the Dolphin at some stage, having bowed to pressure from over keen friends, needed any port in a storm or fancied just them self as the second-coming of Sinatra. You remember The Dolphin. It is many a Hackney local’s guilty pleasure and people even journey to sample its dive bar chic. That’s because once you’re in and ‘intoxicated’, it’s actually a lot of fun – just remember to do most of the intoxicating in advance.

Located on Hackney’s Mare Street, The Dolphin is just like any other old boozer on the outside. But when the clock pushes on past midnight, The Dolphin gets going. The interior is a mixture; sticky floors, pool tables, a fort-like beer garden, Sky Sports and karaoke all the time. Usually the karaoke dies down to be replaced by DJs playing dirty pop, house, electro, dubstep… you name it. Frequented by a crowd of drunken funsters, a night here is a rite of passage. You might cross over the street to avoid the same person you’ll end up hugging in The Dolphin. Whether that’s a good or a bad thing, we’re not sure.

Serving a pedestrian range of lager and house wine you’re best sticking to the Jager Bombs. With opening hours that extend till 5am, you’ll need the Red Bull. With over ten years of offering the weirdest kind of nightlife appeal The Dolphin deserves respect. You may not go back regularly but you will always respect it and you will always remember it.
