My family and I have eaten in numerous Persian restaurants in London and consider that we know a lot about good Persian cuisine, having also lived in Iran for several years. We visited Shandis at lunchtime last Sunday for the first time after having explored Islington in the cool fresh air - we were very hungry! We were very impressed by the bright and cheerful atmosphere which greeted us including the young Armenian waitress. The menu is extensive and easy to follow. We were four adults and we each had something different for the main course. We started with delicious creamy yoghurt and cucumber (mast-e-khiar) and freshly baked bread. The meat and chicken were cooked to perfection and the rice was delicately flavoured.
Shandis is licensed to sell alcohol but we chose a pot of Persian tea topped with fresh mint - very refreshing.
Everything was extremely clean including the toilets. I certainly do not recognise the comment posted on 22/11/09 as being Shandis.
There are so many restaurants to chose from in Upper Street and Shandis is certainly one that should be tried. We shall be going back there again soon when we are next in Isington.

Completely disagree with above comment. Have been to Shandis many times, very friendly service, very good food and good variety of it. I know quit a few persian restaurants in London and this is definately one of the good ones. Very nice and quiet atmosphere.

The service was very poor , the food was cold and inedible and the toilets were disgusting to say the least. The manager was very arogant when I approached him to complain on the night.

We have to disagree with the comment below.

We went to Shandis last Thursday and we had a very pleasant dining experience. We were 4 adults and the service was great. The manager who served us was very friendly and talked us through the menu. The manager also provided us with taste testers as we had not eaten Persian food before. The testers were served as part of the starters so that we could then decide on what we wanted for our mains. Where in London do you get this service and with a big grateful smile.......? (very rare). The food was superb, the service was superb and we can't wait to go back.

This little restaurant is a hidden gem that serves real food with real service by real people.

For four adults we paid about £20 per head (no wine but included dessert) and we ate so much there was no room for more.
