All In London Review
A solid 7/10 which is more than be said for some of Brick Lane's curry houses
Ushered into the air-conditioned downstairs basement, our large group was free to make as much noise as we wanted. Upstairs the restaurant caters for smaller groups who aren’t perhaps so keen to exploit the BYO rule with multiple bags of beers.
As with any curry house on Brick Lane it’s all about, you guessed it, the curry. Having gone through the motions of the sickly sweet, impossible to decipher dishes in a range of other Brick Lane restaurants we’re pleased to report that there was none of that at Cinnamon. The spread of traditional curries and house specials were well balanced with a rich depth of flavour. And we didn’t even stain our fingernails on sauce, which is always a good sign. Pressed for a recommendation beyond the traditional house specials we’d opt for the kebabish jalfrezi, a spicy dish of minced lamb with onion and tomato in a green sauce. Cinnamon is a solid choice that you can be confident will give you a decent curry. No, it’s not among the best Indian restaurants in London but it’s a solid seven out of ten, which means you can cut the traipsing up and down and head straight in.

No-frills menu with staple dishes
When we finally get to Cinnamon it's empty, however it’s early and there are at least 30 other restaurants on this street to choose from. It’s clean and unpretentious, with napkins neatly folded on tables with red table cloths.
The no-frills menu offers staple dishes such as jalfrezis, tikkas, baltis and biryanis. While we decide, we nibble on poppadums with mint and mango chutneys, but the zingy tomato one is our favourite.
The garlic king prawns (£4.95) are very appetising; the prawn puree (£3.95) consists of succulent prawns in a mild creamy sauce, wrapped in naan.
The lamb royal (£9.95) has tender pieces of lamb cooked in spices and added to a mild creamy coconutty sauce with pieces of mango. The chicken baddami (£8.95) has slices of chicken tikka in a yoghurty sauce with almonds, pistachios, cashews, peanuts, and a serving of very fresh salad.
Tasty sag aloo (£3.40) and a slightly stodgy cheese naan (£2.50) complete our meal, which we wash down with a surprisingly good bottle of the house Merlot. By the time we finish, the restaurant is packed, and the waiters – who have been helpful and friendly throughout - are flitting around very attentively to ensure everyone is seen to.
Amongst all the touting choosing a venue for dinner on Brick Lane can be a daunting task. Cinnamon is one place that offers simple, good food at reasonable prices.
