All In London Review

With places like this, who needs coffee-shop chains?

Located in deepest Shoreditch, this charming Italian delicatessen offers something a little different to the coffee shops we’re accustomed to on London’s high streets. There is an authenticity at Franze & Evans that runs through everything from the décor to the taste of the coffee and the freshly prepared food.

Arriving on a Saturday afternoon I quickly realised how popular this place is; we were lucky there was one empty table left and in the two hours we were there dozens of people of all ages and nationalities came and went. Surrounding us were shelves of delicious looking products: olives, pastas, pasta sauces, old fashioned jars of rhubarb and custard sweets amongst others, and even a selection of vinegars and oils to try before deciding which ones to buy.

At the counter we found mouth-watering cakes (lemon and courgette, chocolate and beetroot cupcakes), pastries, and a wide selection of cheeses and cold meats - think aged Parma ham, traditional salamis and Parmesan. Aside from the cakes, freshly prepared sandwiches to take away, and some of the best coffee I have had in a very long time, hot meals are also offered at weekends.

The menus have the date printed on them, suggesting they vary daily according to whatever ingredients are in stock on the day. Despite the luxurious combinations everything on the menu was around the £6 to £7 mark. The scrambled eggs on walnut bread sounded very enticing, but in the end I plumped for the focaccia which happened to have some of my favourite (and usually quite pricey) ingredients: thick sliced parmesan, chargrilled artichoke hearts, sundried tomatoes, mushrooms and roasted peppers with a rocket leaf and balsamic vinegar salad. My companion opted for the gnocchi, soft dumplings in a tasty tomato sauce.

A leaflet on each table describes how Franze & Evans is the brainchild of three friends whose love of home-style food and cafes led them to opening their very own deli. It’s a shame London lacks the café culture of other European cities and instead seems to make up for it with an endless array of Starbucks, Costa Coffees and Café Neros selling overpriced tasteless coffee and boring pre-packaged sandwiches, but this also makes Franze & Evans all the more special.

A very pleasant way to spend a lazy afternoon and somewhere I feel content to spend my money, I recommend stopping by if you’re in the area and feeling peckish. And this being Shoreditch, you may even get to witness a fashion shoot taking place outside just like I did.

This place was recommended by a friend as a place to visit when in Brick Lane. However I was shocked by the uptight italian gentleman (who appeared to be the owner). He was rude to the point of aggression and made the whole experience quite unpleasant. Out polite requests about the eggs were met with disdain, and the end result was underwhelming. .The final bill was astronomical and needless to say we will not be returning
