All In London Review

The definite focus on the food above all else certainly pays off here.

Review Image
The legendary ‘Pho Mile’ of Kingsland Road has more choice of Vietnamese food than anywhere else in London, which makes choosing the right restaurant a tough proposition. Standing out from the crowd thanks to rave reviews of its food, Mien Tay is one of the chosen ones.

Despite its shabby façade, this authentic Vietnamese restaurant is well worthy of all the fuss. Forget the bland walls, faded pictures and simple set-up, judge it on the cuisine. With two rooms and a first floor, Mien Tay is big enough to mean that queues are generally short. There are long tables to accommodate large groups – there’s always at least one or two in the house – along with some more intimate places for couples and smaller parties.

Sadly, for bank balances, the BYOB policy is now defunct, a point enforced by an A4 print out in the window to make sure there are no sneaky beers brought in. Prices are still reasonable for the quality of the food with starters and main meals blurring at around £7.50 a dish. While the large pho – a noodle soup of sorts – is the national dish and reportedly excellent here, we’d rather try a selection of the starters and mains to get a sense of the cooking. The char-grilled quail with honey and garlic is incredible, along with the papaya and dry sicy beef salad. Fried frog legs are surprisingly good, offering rich battered meat, coated in butter, while the stir fried goat with galangal curry has a depth of flavour that makes it a must. There is a short, concise wine list and a couple of Vietnamese beers in the way of drinks.

First impressions of Mien Tay’s shabby exterior might give you the sense that all the focus is on the food. When you’re done, you’ll know it to be true, so judge away…
