All In London Review

A good choice for those new to the tapas experience

My dining companion is a tapas fanatic and almost a regular here. I had been on a few occasions previously – and would have been more often except that it is always busy and you need to book.

My friend had booked us a table for 6.30pm – but somehow they had “lost” the booking. But as it was early they managed to find us a small, high side table where we perched on the stools that are also placed around the enormous central bar area where many people prefer to sit. I guess you get to talk to other people and make new friends that way.

Whilst the restaurant is authentically Spanish (nice plates and paintings on the walls), our waitress was Italian and didn’t know about the owners own vineyard in Valencia. Whilst usually we would drink one of the Spanish wines, we were celebrating so had a bottle of the only French champagne listed – a pleasant Laurent Perrier (£35). We had to remind them to bring our tap water though.

The tapas is traditional and no frills. And the menu isn’t very long. But it all comes in good sized portions and is reliably what is described on the menu – a good choice for those new to the tapas experience.

We ordered our food in two batches. In the first, the tortilla was warm and excellent, the calamari rings tender, the manchego (a solid, woody cheese) with walnuts and firm quince jelly as expected and the tuna croquettes were solid and flavoursome. My companion was pleased to note that they provide rolls rather than sliced bread now – better for dipping into the sauces and oil.

Having taken the edge off our appetites, we ordered a few more dishes – the patatas bravas (sauté potato chunks in a thick spicy tomato sauce), chorizo in oil, green beans with almonds and – the high point for me – huge prawns in oil and garlic.

It was busy, busy, busy – with a constant stream of couples (both mixed and same sex) coming and going (possibly some to the New Vic across the road) and a reassuring number of Latinos. I was surprised to even see a couple of blokes eating at the bar for most of the time we were there whilst conducting what looked like a business meeting.

What was a bit of a challenge was the space between those seated at the bar and those seated at the side tables means that getting in and out (or to the loos) was a series of generally friendly negotiations – although when we were there one bloke at the bar got a bit stroppy about being constantly moved.

But overall a good choice for tapas. Our bill came to about £80 – but £35 of this was for the champagne.

Great food. A busy place. I definitely recommend booking a table beforehand. Service can be slow at times, but the food is definitely worth waiting for!
