All In London Review

Refreshingly alternative interior to the average craft beer bar and a sweet vinyl inspired soundtrack

Review Image
Craft beer, vinyl records and a new approach to the modern pub make The Plough a welcome addition to this area of Hackney. Clapton is changing and Homerton won’t be left behind if pubs like this have anything to do with it.

After seeing a short spell as a Turkish restaurant, this neighbourhood venue has reverted back to a bar. A friendly place, the charm offensive is designed to attract a cast of locals to keep coming back. And after our visit we’d have to concede that they are doing a good job at it. Between the Camden Hells unfiltered lager, the blue macaroni and cheese, the chicken burger on milk roll and the talkative barman, we’ll be back for more of the same.

Turning up on a Saturday afternoon to find the bar quiet was a welcome change to the usual hip Hackney pubs where finding a seat is as unlikely as paying under £4.50 for a pint. The Plough may stay in line with its prices but at least there was seating waiting. As the night progressed, the pub filled and the music got going. They make a lot of noise about vinyl playing every night of the week and specialist DJs coming in on Friday and Saturday nights. Again, we can see why. The DJ played a booming selection of old 45’s - including Richard Berry’s sumptuous original Louie Louie – and we could have got in amongst the space on the attractive wooden floor for a dance had we not had one too many bites of that macaroni. The Plough is a comfortable bar. The stylish décor isn’t over the top, the modern food van inspired menu isn’t a cliché and the craft beers are rare and unusual enough to warrant their prices – just.

Homerton is an untapped field of opportunity for pubs offering the triple threat of good food, beer and music. And The Plough is out there, ahem, ploughing a lone furrow.
