All In London Review

Safe, inexpensive menu at Birothi

If you happen to stray towards the most northwestern part of London, (Ruislip, Hillingdon, Ickenham, etc.) driving for miles surrounded by greenery and breathing in the (allegedly) fresher air might make you peckish. The local eateries seem to mostly consist of Indian or Chinese takeaways, however Birothi offers good value Indian food in comfortable surroundings. As opposed to many Indian eateries, the interior lacks the sparkly ornaments and bright lighting, instead it features intimate booth seating shielded from the neighbouring seats by branches which I am told often contain birds, however as none make themselves known on this visit I am unable to confirm whether they are real or not.

It’s 7 pm on a Friday night and save for a few mature couples conversing the volume level is low, that is until Ickenham’s young crowd appear a couple of hours later, perhaps on the start of a night out on the local tiles; the air certainly turns a little rowdier as bottles of Rose are swiftly consumed - there is a small selection of wines which start at a reasonable £9.95.

The menu doesn’t necessarily break any new ground, however there is a reliable selection of curries, from hot Vindaloos to milder kormas, most of which are priced between £7 - £9. Staff are extremely obliging when someone’s nut allergy is revealed, despite the kitchen already being part-through preparing a prawn korma, and they set about cooking it from scratch minus the crushed almonds. A mushroom bhaji has juicy sliced mushrooms that have absorbed just a hint of chilli and garlic; the chicken korma is sweet and coconutty and the naans are very generously sized. For dessert a selection of ice creams and sorbets are available; the “lemon surprise”, turns out to be a zesty lemon sorbet stuffed inside a real lemon; minty chocolate chip ice cream with crushed walnuts is equally refreshing. Birothi is a safe, inexpensive option if your tastebuds are longing for cumin and ginger.
