All In London Review

one of those no-nonsense, reliable restaurants that you know you will return to regularly

I used to come here many years ago – it was the only decent restaurant (i.e. with white tablecloths) in the Red Lion Square area in those days. But as the area has been spruced up with lots of new development, so too has this old favourite had a refresh and refurbishment. Inside it is surprisingly modern and light.

My companion had suggested the place as she had been there recently and enjoyed the atmosphere so much that she stayed all evening. It was nice. Real Italian staff who were quietly efficient and just welcoming enough.

We were a little disappointed that there was no Aperol for our aperitif but it meant we got stuck in straight away with some wine – VerdicchioClassico (£19.25) which was crisp and light and cold enough.

The menu transports you back in time – uncomplicated Italian favourites abound. I was very tempted by the Linguine Vongole (clams, no tomato sauce) which I usually have when in a traditional Italian restaurant.

There are numerous pasta dishes and a wide range of pizzas so it is likely to have something to please everyone.

I opted for bruschetta pomodoro (£4.95) to start – a generous portion that was light and tasty while my companion choose the calamari fritti (£6.25).

For her main course, she chose one of the house specials – SaltinboccaallaRomana (£16.95) which is vealsliceswithParmaham andsage. Also some zucchini fritti (£2.95) and fried potatoes (£2.95). It passed her taste test.

Meanwhile, I opted for Scalloppaalla Milanese (£16.95) – breadedvealescalopewith garlicandrosemary plusaspaghettidish (I choose pomodoro e basilica – traditionalNeapolitantomatoandbasilsauce). While it isn’t haute cuisine by any standards, it was tasty and a reasonable sized portion. I enjoyed it.

We were replete but I had to taste the gelato and selected limone (£6.95) and was delighted that a shot of limoncello was splashed over it before we attacked it.

The total bill came to £77.20 but we had a special offer so £28 was taken off the bill leaving £49.20 which we felt was good value for money. Service isn’t included.

It’s one of those no-nonsense, reliable restaurants that you know you will return to regularly.
