All In London Review

Sushi So provides cheap and filling meals

The Oxford Dictionary defines dinner as “the main meal of the day, taken either around midday or the evening”. To some, dinner is a formal occasion, when smart attire is donned and the food itself is a mere excuse to socialise. To others it is a simple necessity, a chore not dissimilar to brushing teeth.

This modest Japanese eatery is clearly not a destination you would go out of your way for, as to begin with it’s located bang on the perilous Euston Road. There is little in the way of décor other than a few paper lamps, however they have provided traditional low tables at the back (where you need to take your shoes off) and there is a conveyor belt transporting clear plastic cases of brightly coloured sushi around the counter. It’s unlicensed, so there is green tea, cold oolong tea and soft drinks, however beers can be bought to take away.

But Sushi So is functional, not fancy, as is the food. The lighter dishes arrive first; the sashimi set contains four pieces of tasty tuna and salmon, and is followed by two skewers of sweet chicken yakitori. The pork katsudon is superb winter food, the bowl of hot rice with egg, onion and big chunks of sweet crispy pork is speedily consumed. Equally comforting are the onigiri, two triangular-shaped balls of rice wrapped in seaweed, one stuffed with cooked salmon and the other with tuna in a syrupy pickle sauce. We also order a sushi set with mackerel, prawn, eel, omelette, salmon nigiri and California rolls, and here lies the only complaint – the rolls contain pieces of avocado that are not yet ripe, giving them an unnecessary crunch.

By the time the bill arrives we realise we’ve ordered enough food for three people, but at £32 it ain’t half bad for a speedy, filling meal.
