2-3 Cowcross Street, Clerkenwell, London
The Polpo restaurant at Smithfield is the third in the group to open, and as with the others has a 'secret' bar in the basement (the Negroni Bar). The restaurant also offers small Venetian plates in humble (yet stylish!) surroundings.
You can book lunchtime tables, but they don't take bookings for dinner; just turn up and they'll seat you as soon as they can - there's always the bar to wait in!
Polpo Smithfield features in these AIL lists...
London's best gin bars
Mix up Vermouth, Campari and gin and you’ve got the basis of one of the greatest cocktails of all time. Yes, we’re quite the Negroni fans at AIL. So how could we ignore the fine subterranean Negroni Bar at Polpo, Smithfield. It has elegance, historic charm and excellent gin. We love it and so will you.
London's best-stocked bars!
Outdated since the late 70s, vermouth, gin and Campari are enjoying a revival, and so the Negroni Bar at Polpo is in vogue. Negroni is gin, vermouth and bitters, perfect for an aperitif. You’ll find it in the basement of the popular restaurant.
London's top restaurant bars
The basement of this popular Venetian restaurant was once a storage unit for meat carcasses. Quick to spot an opportunity, Polpo’s owners decided to turn the tiny space into a bar offering Italian aperitifs like negroni and Aperol spritz.
