This Vietnamese restaurant will give neighbours a run for their money

King Street in Ravenscourt Park is filled with commendable restaurants, with a large quantity of Indian and Thai eateries. There is one other Vietnamese restaurant here, the slick Saigon Saigon; Da Nang Kitchen is the latest Vietnamese contender, having opened around a month ago.

Starters are generous in size; rolls stuffed with minced duck and mushroom have a good earthy flavour, paired with a sweet dipping sauce. The soft shell crab is coated in a crispy batter and doesn’t scrimp on crab meat, it also looks like it’s been arranged on the plate to look like a spider. As with most of the dishes we try, fresh chopped chillies are on the side for you to add your own spice.

The bo luc lac or diced rump steak flash fried in cognac is very pleasant, as the beef is very tender and practically falls apart, but the standout dish is the heo kho tao, which arrives in a sizzling clay pot. Chunks of pork with a thick layer of fat have been left to simmer in a broth made with coconut juice, along with a breaded egg halved in two. The meat is juicy and flavoursome, the egg is salty and surprisingly firm, and the broth is garlicky and aromatic.

There is a wide choice of noodle dishes on offer so we opt for the spicy egg noodles, which we order crispy rather than soft, with chicken, beef, sliced pork and prawns. All the meat is tender and full of flavour, spices are not overpowering and vegetables are fresh and crunchy, it’s also big enough for two to share. The stir-fried glass vermicelli is another sizzling clay pot dish, loaded with chicken and cooked celery.

We order stir-fried shiitake mushrooms thinking they’re a side dish, but it turns out to be another main. We make the same mistake with the noodles, and no one corrects us despite ordering a total of five main courses – perhaps we looked very hungry. At least we feel slightly less foolish when we later learn this is a common mistake, and they’re considering updating the menu.

With most mains costing between £6.50 and £8 Da Nang is exceptional value. It certainly gives its neighbours a run for their money.

This is a nice place to try different food. I have never had Vietnamese food before and I liked it.

Went along based on recommendation and I'm glad I did. My wife and I and another couple took the plunge and enjoyed some of the finest eastern food. It was great value for money for such fine quality and it was the four of us. I would strongly recommend their tasty Vietnamese pancake! mmmMMM
