Maxwell's was one of the first American restaurants to be established in London and has a lively, upbeat atmosphere with friendly staff serving large portions of food including chunky chips, shrimp caesar salad and imported prime beef burgers at affordable prices. As well as this, they serve traditional cocktails including the original Maxwell's 'Silver Hammer' and a selection of wines and beers for you to enjoy along with your meal. This branch can cater for private parties of up to 60 guests upon request. Seating on the pavement is provided, weather permitting.

All In London Review

A bit like TGI Fridays – but less formulaic...

You really can’t miss this one – it’s a stone’s throw from the Covent Garden tube station and on the way to the market. You topple down some steps into one of the largest places there are – so usually a venue that you just pop into rather than book.

There’s a large bar that is always busy. And there are seating areas upstairs and a huge area below. I have been here lots of times – on girls nights out, with the kids and as part of a couple who are not into romance!

The décor is great. The music is loud enough that you can sing along (and the staff don’t seem to mind if you do – as long as you are not too loud) and there is plenty of space between tables. It’s a bit like TGI Fridays – but less formulaic.

I usually have a burger here (£9.25-£13.95) but there is an extensive menu. Starters include buffalo wings, Portobello mushrooms, crispy fried squid, chicken quesadilla, tomato and mozorella salad, nachos (£6-7). There are salads and sandwiches (they no longer do their amazing Cobb salad which was a veritable feast but there are plenty of options) and meat and fish dishes including herbed chicken and mash (£13.25), peri peri chicken (£13.95 for those that would have preferred to go to Nandos – as my son often does), grilled tuna steak (£14.45), hickory smoked ribs (£15.75 – my daughter’s favourite) as well as some vegetarian pasta and fajitas choices. Sides come separate (from £around £2.50 to £3.50) although the burgers and main courses come with fries and stuff included.

My kids love the shakes and malts (£2.45 to £3.95) although I usually have a cocktail (from £5 – and they do a mean Brandy Alexander and I love the seabreeze) or a glass of wine. But you can get a good bottle of wine from around £16 so this is a better option if there is more than one adult drinking.

The setting for Maxwell's is very nice. We were seated very quickly and our drink order was taken. We were asked if we would like some water and replied yes, thinking it would be a jug of iced tap water. Instead we got a bottle of still water, which i wasn't sure hadn't been filled from the tap and much to my dismay were charged £4 for.

We decided to eat at this restaurant as it was listed on this website as being a very reasonable place to eat and being a single mum on holiday, every little counts. Although the food was ok, nothing spectacular, and only my son had a dessert i was amazed at the £47 bill. I paid on my credit card and was even more amazed when i was asked what amount i would like to pay! I'm a little old fashioned in that if i wish to leave a tip it will be left on the table.

I won't be eating there again.

I ate at Maxwells in December 2007 and was very impressed with the food, service and lovely atmosphere. I will definitely return there again when I visit London this November.
