Will Beckett and Huw Gott are bringing Hawksmoor to West London this summer with the opening of Hawksmoor Knightsbridge on Yeoman’s Row on Thursday, 3 July. Situated on the site that housed Frankie’s restaurant, the fifth Hawksmoor will have 130 covers in the restaurant and 25 in the bar. Expect to see a glamorous subterranean 1930s interior and a menu revolving around what Will and Huw do best – amazing steaks from ethically reared British cattle, alongside new dishes and cocktails, currently being perfected.

All In London Review

The steaks seduce, the architecture is memorable but the Ferrero Rocher dessert is something else...

Review Image
The newest offering from the chain of high-class steak restaurants, Hawksmoor Knightsbridge seamlessly matches up to its established siblings. With more than a splash of art deco inspiration in both the exterior and the interior, Knightsbridge puts big and brash design with understated glamour and comfort to create an environment fit to serve the finest cuts of cow.

Hawksmoor love a basement and once you’re past the heavy dark green door and bold brass rails of the entrance that’s exactly where you’re headed. Beyond the – ultra friendly - hotel-style reception you’ll find the bar. Take a seat against the counter or take one of the few spare informal table seats in a miniature lounge area. I can recommend the Full Fat Old Fashioned, a butter infused bourbon version of the classic that will leave you first gasping for water, followed by another one.

Like the entrance the dining area continues with the grand art deco statement. Booths are spread around the spacious room, encircling more formal and intimate tables. The decorative lamps and up-lighting, which exposes the spectacular curvature of the walls, are stand out touches but there is an overall sense of a knowing kind of gauche that is hard not to love.

If you’re familiar with Hawksmoor then you’ll know that you can find the prime cuts of beef on the chalkboards mounted on the walls. Chateaubriand, porterhouse and t-bone are the main event, going up to an eye watering (mouthwatering?) 1.3kg in weight. Alternatively – if you’re not sharing or want a smaller cut - try the fillet, bone-in sirloin or rib eye from the main menu. Hawksmoor is among the standard-bearers for steak in London and at Knightsbridge the quality is impeccable. We share a selection of lobster macaroni, half a lobster, anchovy hollandaise sauce and a bottle of Syrah (as close to the house wine as possible). For £20, the half-lobster was a disappointing size and at £16 the lobster macaroni was on the steep side. This branch of Hawksmoor goes heavier on the fish side of its menu but judging by our lobster experience the value is all in the steak.

Dessert steps us up to next level indulgence as we order the ‘Ferrero Rocher’. Essentially an oversized serving of the famed ambassador’s favourite, it comes with hazelnut ice cream inside a chocolate hard shell coated in edible gold. And yes, with it they are really spoiling us.

At £160 including wine and service, Hawksmoor is an extravagant evening out. It is undeniably overpriced in places – steer clear of the starters - but the details in the food, the ambiance and the architecture make it one of those once in a while places worth the outlay.

Contradiction in terms? Think again...

Hawksmoor is one of those restaurants where it’s all too easy to blow your budget. However if you still want to try the capital’s favourite steakhouse without breaking the bank, their express menu is just £24 for two courses, available till 6pm.
