El Ganso or "The Goose" comes as a welcome addition to this area of Hackney and compliments the already thriving local culinary scene. An intimate, Spanish tapas restaurant at its core, El Ganso is the brainchild of experienced restaurateur Ihsan Tuncay and the much-celebrated Spanish chef Marcelo
Sánchez Cabrera. He chooses to use modern techniques and the best possible ingredients to create a menu which demonstrates his particular love of fish and shellfish, whilst also having hints of his favourite Japanese and South American influences.

All In London Review

A classic tapas restaurant at heart, the food does the talking here.

Tapas restaurants are notoriously difficult to get right but when they work there are few better evenings than those spent grazing on quality cured meats, fish and cheese while drinking too much wine. El Ganso is the latest in a long line of new eateries to open up on Broadway Market, bringing with it a chef who honed his passion for food back in Valencia. A small, compact restaurant it is all weathered wooden tables pushed close, cosy booths, brick and hung mirrors. Simple.

A classic tapas restaurant at heart, the food does the talking here. Serving a range of small bites from miniature pork risottos and salmon Carpaccio, to jamon croquettes and Spanish cheeses; the authenticity is never in question. Our favourite dish is the gambas en suquet, a rich fish stew with prawns and potatoes that is the kind of bowl of food that makes you come over all sad and morose as you near the end of it. But on a lighter note, we naturally order the excellent sangria before following it up with the house white – reasonable at £15 a bottle. The cost of the small sharing dishes are similarly good value and while it’s often easy to over order with tapas, you shouldn’t end up spending more than £50 between two of you, including wine.

The atmosphere is loud and busy so if you’re not into sharing round your conversation and being drawn into the noise of nearby tables then you might not appreciate it. We like the community that the small size creates and while it may not be the best tapas experience we’ve had in London, it is well on the right track.
