All In London Review

Italian bar life, Soho style from the mind of Tony Conigliaro

Review Image
Soho has always had a strong Italian connection and the arrival of Tony Conigliaro’s Bar Termini has only strengthened the ties. Bringing with it a sort of idealized version of Italian bar life, the Old Compton Street space is as impressive as its famous owner’s abilities to mix the perfect drink.

To act as a café by day and a bar by night, Termini can’t simply rely on the hard stuff, which is why its caffeinated lineup is a serious one. Dispensed from a vintage espresso machine, shots find their way into an array of Italian drinks from the ice cold Caffé Freddo to the chocolaty Bicerin. In between the drinks light bites like beef carpaccio, burrata, cheese and charcuterie will keep you topped up in refined Italian style. With more in common with Bar Italia around the corner than the average Starbucks, Bar Termini plays on the desire to have a go on the European café culture that London just doesn’t do. Soho is probably as close as we get and now Bar Termini is another option to go with Café Boheme and the aforementioned Bar Italia.

Stylishly understated both on the outside and within, things are kept simple with subdued green tones, exposed brickwork, checkerboard floor tiles and the excellent appearance of staff in ties, Termini jackets and aprons (a look that manages to steer fashionably clear of being contrived).

Good looks and good coffee are one thing, but Tony Conigliaro has made his name on cocktails. Bar Termini is a dry, bitter, sweetly balanced sort of place, in that it’s signature is its house-mixed Negronis. Available in Superiore, Rosato, Classico or Robusto, Mr. Tony C. was never going to simply throw together gin, Martini Rosso and Campari and be done with it. Each is a different take on the classic, and we’d recommend trying them all. Beyond the Negroni, a small range of cocktails accompanies and staff are happy to make off menu classics.

Having got through the whole review without mentioning la dolce vita a single time, I’m about to go and ruin all that good work. Coffee and cured meats by day, red drinks by night, Bar Termini is the good life.

Is it a café or a bar?

This Italian coffee shop has a concise menu of coffee, drinks, and charcuterie and cheese dishes to appease the munchies. The cocktails are courtesy of one Tony Conigliaro of 69 Colebrooke Row. For a cheap, quick fix try their Espresso al Bar for just £1.
