All In London Review

On the night we visit Jamaican restaurant Rudie’s, they’re doing a roaring trade. Perhaps it’s no surprise as they’re located in hipcentric Dalston, just a few metres up from Stoke Newington Road’s hotspots Voodoo Ray’s and Birthdays. An equal mix of trendy Dalstonites and families fill the room.

The soundtrack is reggae and soul (we pick out many Bob Marley classics and Desmond Dekker &The Aces’ Israelites), the food is Caribbean. We start with bammy bruschetta, the bruschetta here made with grated cassava and fried till golden rather than bread. It’s beautifully doughy and topped with flaked salt cod, cherry tomatoes, coriander and mint. The ackee and saltfish is stuffed into sliders made with soft, hot dumpling bread.

Excitingly there’s grilled lobster on the menu, but not wanting to spray our neighbours with bits of crustacea (oh yeah, it’s happened) we go for the lamb rump. It’s a flavoursome bit of meat that’s been marinated for 24 hours in jerk sauce before being charcoal-grilled. We choose the banana pepper sauce which is medium spicy (the other options being hot papaya or mild jerk ketchup).

The spicy cheeseburger is great. The jerk chuck beef patty is rare in the centre, with melted cheese, sweet honey mustard, red onion and pickle. It comes with plantain crisps served with jerk ketchup, but we also get sweet potato fries and the staple rice and peas as sides.

Despite being incredibly busy Rudie’s appears to run like clockwork with smiley faces all round, and lovingly presented food.
