All In London Review

Their speciality are the gyoza - however the best dishes are the Bao buns and ebi fritters

Review Image
Given its title it's pretty clear what their speciality is - the famous little Japanese dumplings, steamed, pan or deep fried.

Steamed parcels of salmon with yuzu coconut chilli oil are very good, as are the pan fried pork gyoza with garlic vinegar and umami soy. But surprisingly their signatures aren't the best dishes. The showstoppers are the giant ebi fritters and the Bao bun with tempura prawns. The soft bun is great, filled with two huge lightly battered prawns, salad, mayonnaise and tonkatsu, the Japanese version of barbecue sauce. The ebi fritters are another two juicy prawns, supremely tender and meaty, coated in tempura batter, drizzled with herb butter, wasabi mayo, and a soy balsamic reduction.

Omakase is a platter of vegetables with seaweed and green beans in a satay-like sauce, sweet potato fries, and steamed aubergine and carrot. The latter are fairly plain and can be regarded as either a palate cleanser or filler.

When it comes to desserts, these turn out to be less exciting than how they read on the menu. Apple cinnamon dumplings are essentially sweet gyoza, served with ice cream. There's more vanilla ice cream deep fried in a crispy coating and drizzled with maple syrup, which gets to us in time before it melts.

Attached to the izakaya-style Murakami on St. Martin's Lane, Gyoza Bar has only been open a few weeks, but it's a hot tip given how packed it is on the night we visit.
