All In London Review

Good portions and an adventurous menu in a testament to what can be created out of the the bowels of a new build block

Review Image
Sister restaurant to The Well in Camberwell, the Perryvale is a fresh new spot for the on-the-rise neighbourhood of Forest Hill. Not blessed with the greatest location - a squashed, wide expanse at the foot of a new build block of flats – the Perryvale doesn’t look much from the outside. Coming through the tunnel at Forest Hill you might even greet the sight of the ugly building with a groan had we not given you this heads-up on its lack of exterior aesthetic merit. But hey, it’s what’s on the inside that counts, right? And on the inside, The Perryvale is a smart restaurant-cum-bar that errs on just the right side of industrial chic, transforming its slightly charmless ground floor of a new block of flats into something stylish and cosy.

Billing itself as a British bistro, the Perryvale carries an ever-evolving menu that changes with the seasons and backs up its prices with quality ingredients from established suppliers. Seats at the bar and in the floor to ceiling windows are suited to cocktails and wine, while more informal tables provide a place for those looking for a more refined evening. We choose refined, naturally, and take a carafe of a rich red Alentejano Alianca Alabastro from Portugal, which sets us back a reasonable £15. Good legs.

Starting with crispy squid, we’re eased into the quality of the food with some well-battered, flavoursome seafood that so often gets overcooked. A mighty fish pie follows, served as a portion for two that could easily serve four but while the rich, thick creaminess of the comfort food classic is delicious, we could have done with seeing a little more fish in the mix. We also taste the rabbit with tarragon and cream, a succulent, tender piece of meat that we would go back for again and again.

Still building a reputation, the Perryvale is establishing itself nicely in a part of town without a foodie reputation. The well-sourced ingredients and classical cooking here might just be a start.
