I met my colleague here for a relaxed business lunch and was immediately captivated by the large thickly sliced steak and mound of chips in front of some nearby diners.

My crab beignet (£6) was chilled and delicious and I shared it with my companion who choose the squid pakora (£8). The presentation was delightful and the portions were man-sized and suitable for hungry workers.

The 300g rump steak (£10.50) was beautifully cooked (there is a central, open kitchen area where you can watch your steak being prepared). It arrived on a plate surrounded by a fierce sauce with a golden colour. My companion’s thali with dashi chicken (£12) proved an adventure of flavours with small piles of herbs and vegetables surrounding it. She experimented with different combinations.

There are high stools around the central bar and cooking area so it would be fine to eat there alone or if you are in a hurry. Around the perimeter there are closed booths which look out into the centre so it’s possible to have some privacy for your conversations.

A 175ml glass of Miroglio viogner (£9.50) was so good that we had two. And we rarely do that at lunchtime.

£65 including service seemed a fair price for a two course lunch in the City of this quality. I shall return again with my meat-eating friends.
