Simpsons Tavern
British Restaurant in The City
London's very best kept secret. The only reason I would nt recommend it is in order to keep it that way. This is Dickensian england, the original. One day it will be sadly gone so go. It s not expensive. The food is public school dinners. It s theatre. The London equivalent to Paris's Le Chartier

My first trip to Simpsons at the invitation of a 15 year regular has been a hearty one. Being St Patrick's day, they had a number of parties in, but managed to squeeze us into a corner table.
The house vin de pays was palatable if a little young and the "theme-of-the-day" beef and guiness pie with champ mash and bacon-garnished cabbage, extremely substantial, (particularly bearing in mind the £10 all in price tag for the food). Service remained friendly and inviting in what was a very full house.
My only regret was that the Irish menu had bumped the usual daily special of calves liver and bacon off of the blackboard.
If you like subtantial portions of "public school dinner"-type food with wine chosen for these belt-tightening times. This is a must. Tables cannot be booked so be prompt.
It was Christmas Eve in the City and a couple of us decided upon a quick and easy Simpson's lunch.
After a couple of beers we were seated and indulged the finest of British steaks, the usual affair with a fat sausage on top and plenty of bubble & squeak.
I've never had a bad lunch at Simpson's, many I can't remember but that's something I'll probably grow out of.
This however was my first Christmas Eve there and very memorable it was.
Christmas song sheets were handed out, we were assigned a line from 'Partridge In A Pear Tree' and when our turn came we rose to our feet and proudly sang out '10 Lords A Leeping' and so the countdown continued around the room.
Great fun, not to
Having arrived at 12:15 on a normal Thursday lunchtime we were offered the choice of two tables.
I chose the Steak and Kidney Pie, Bubble and Squeak with Cauliflower Cheese on the side. The size of the portion was exceptional and the accompanying Chilean Merlot was served up in 250ml form.
The home made food really hit the spot, but two side orders aren't for the faint hearted and so go with a good appetite. The service was attentive despite the busy nature of the place. The furnishing is workmanlike if not luxurious, but the food is main event and offered excellent vfm for the city.
Personally I can't wait to go back but get there early as plenty of people know of this little oas
Have your say
