I would NOT recommend this venue. Classic Pad Thai is pretty good, the rest of the food is just above average. Service is really bad due to anti-social behaviour of the manager (pretty rude and not children friendly). One day I spilled my glass of wine onto the table, and she refused to change my glass which I have barely touched. Another day, she insisted that I could not sit with my child in the mezzanine area because my child would play with the cushions. Although it is very close to my flat, I rarely go there of the bad service and pretty average food.

I have a real love hate relationship with this place. I've been 3 or 4 times now, but sadly my recent visit will be the last. Undoubtedly, this restaurant does exceptionally good Thai food at a pretty reasonable price and the setting is cool. However, having had pretty average service in the past, our party of 4 were actually verbally abused by the manager this weekend.

Sure, the restaurant was busy and the manager was doing a job to keep people moving along, which is fair enough, but when we were told we couldn't pay with multiple cards as it took to long we were pretty astonished. When I explained we couldn't get cash out as the only ATM in that end of Camden was broken, the manager tutted, rolled her eyes and told us it was rude of us to pay on more than one card when the restaurant was busy. There was no point arguing our case, or asking to speak to the manager - as we already were - we paid and left.

Shabby service like this should not be rewarded with a visit.

we decided to go as it had good reviews and it was opposite the roundhouse. The starter of vegetable tempura was fine, but before we had finished it our main courses of beef penang curry and beef massamaan curry arrived on large blue leaf plates,we soon realised that it was all about packing in the customers and getting you to vacate the precious table. The massaman curry only had a tablespoon of beef and was lukewarm, I complained to the owner who said this was how it was meant to be so I changed it to the panang curry which had a little more to it. The food came and to my mind it was the same curry with a few potatoes added it was ok. Then just as soon as we finished the plates were taken and a few minutes later the bill arrived, even though we were thinking about a desert or a jasmine tea. We decided to leave at this point and DID NOT PAY THE SERVICE CHARGE. We told the owner about our experience at Muang Thai and all she could say was that it was very busy and her attitude was flippant and dismissive. TO SUM UP FOOD SMALL PORTIONS EVEN BY THAI STANDARDS, A TOURIST JOINT AND A RUDE OWNER DO NOT VISIT.

I was very sceptical when I read the previous comment. What swang it for me was the comments on being patronised by the "locals" (the Camden crowd know a good thing...if it was terrible they would avoid it like the plague). I visited it last night (06-02-10). I took the precaution of booking a table and was glad I did. I arrived 1hr late to find that my table was kept vacant despite a large queue of people waiting to be seated (as the patron said, you were very polite on the phone and I wanted to make sure you had a good visit!.. customer service before profit a new one for me in these hard times…).
The meal was very good, service friendly, prompt and efficient (not in a Germanic way). Take care when ordering as the portion sizes can be very large. Their seafood is well done.. their plain noodle exquisite. I have rated it an 8 as I need to visit it again maybe at lunch time or with a larger group of people (A 10 was for me at the Burj in Dubai!).
Price was middle range. 2 starters, 3 main (a fish, chicken and excellent mix veg), complimented with a noodle & plain rice dish, with soft drinks (no wine) came to £60.
Atmosphere was informal but clearly a knowledgeable clientele.
In all a good night and I have found another place to dine in, when the occasion demands it.
I could not be bothered registering on this site but my details are below should you want to verify this as genuine (note I have a ruthless spam filter)

This used to be our local Thai and we probably didn't appreciate it as much as we should have! Now we are no longer near, we sometimes make a special trip, as good Thai is actually quite rare. Properly authentic food in a small proprietor run restaurant with friendly staff. A rare gem.

I've eaten at many Thai places in London but this is by far the best. Food, service, value for money - it all deserves a 10/10.

Muang Thai serves the most delicious Thai food I've ever tasted. I've had two birthday meals here and all my friends agree with me (and have been back there themselves). Service is always friendly and excellent and there is a nice family feel to the restaurant.
