All In London Review

As they are keen to boast, Mangal 2 is one of the best kebabs around.

If you were told that two of Britain’s most famous artists ate at the same Turkish ocakbasi restaurant every night would you be curious to find out if it was true? Of course you would, which is probably one of the reasons that it isn’t just the people of Dalston who know about the pleasures of Mangal 2’s kebabs. On our most recent Sunday night visit, sure enough, in walked Gilbert and George. Fully dressed to impress, they greeted the waiters with a nod and took up their regular table. So it is a fact – strange but true.

Named Mangal 2, having sold the original restaurant (located just around the corner), this restaurant has long claimed to be the greatest Turkish ocakbasi in East London. Thanks to the boasts, we slide in to our window seats, peruse the menu and opt to try it all – or at least everything that comes with the choice of set menu number one. It turns out that what we get is a selection of grilled meats, rice, meze and bread. The bread isn’t the best we’ve eaten in this part of town but the rice is incredible. The mixed meze is plenty generous with a hummus, tzatziki, couscous and Turkish potato salad combo offering a range of flavours and textures to prepare us for the main event. Naturally, the meat is where we’re really going to judge the Mangal 2. A mix of lamb and chicken shish, pork chops, ribs and minced lamb is more than enough for the two of us to come to the conclusion that Mangal 2 might just be one of the best kebabs in East London. And if Gilbert and George like it enough to visit every single night then they probably agree with us.
