All In London Review

The menu plays it safe, but the Soho House name precedes it

Review Image
London is going crazy for Parisian brasseries at the moment. There’s been a spate of them opening in the last year or so, from Brasserie Chavot and Brasserie Zedel (by the same people as the Wolseley and the Delaunay) to the Brasserie Blanc chain.

High Road Brasserie predates this trend, as it opened in 2006, however all brasserie décor is present here: round tables, mirrored walls and chic black waistcoats on the staff. Those clever Soho House chaps are behind it, and as with all of their other venues it has struck a chord with the locals, in this case the well-heeled inhabitants of Chiswick; it’s a Wednesday night and there’s barely an empty table in sight.

The menu plays it safe, with grilled dishes, shellfish, steak frites and mains like pork schnitzel, fish pie and place goujons with chips. A ceviche-like seabass tartare with red onion and plenty of lime is nice and fresh; the twice baked Gruyere soufflé is divinely naughty, served with an additional pot of gloopy cheese sauce.

We find the mains a little more bland. The grilled chicken with rosemary and lemon is a juicy butterflied breast, but could do with a little more marinating. The pork T bone is a thick hunk of steak which means parts of it are a little dry, and the wild garlic mash is too mild.

As with most of the Soho House establishments, there is a private members’ club and accommodation attached to the restaurant. If the food were a little more adventurous then perhaps this would be the main draw rather than its parent company’s cachet.

We had a great hearty dinner here last winter and the place was hopping! The location is not great in the evenings but inside the food is just right. The service was great in spite of it being very busy. Try the bisque. It is heavenly.
