Needing replenishment, nourishment and a big dose of flavour, the Afab Star was not the obvious choice for a Sunday evening morsal.
Following through the inconspicuous entrance we were greeted by the warm and knowledgable Michael.
African cuisine being new to us we requested 'a flavour of the region' to which we received a smorgasbord of freshly cooked heart warming dishes including grilled sea bream, a spicy bean stew and melt in the mouth beef.
The matoki impressed and displayed the expert spicing skills of someone who truly understands their ingredients.

Extremely tasty food that stays true to it's Ugandan roots. Aromatic rice, delicious beef stew, and steaming matoke (a vegetable that's a mix between a banana and a potato) with g-nut sauce. It transported me back to Africa, while keeping my English dinner guests happy too. Come with an empty belly as they serve up huge portions! The owner is very friendly too. Worth travelling to South London for.

Firstly, it is important to note that if it is a fine dining experience you are after, you will probably not receive this here or any other grass roots African restaurant. This is a restaurant for Africans although that is not to say that if you are not African, you will not be welcomed, as the owner/chef greeted my partner with the biggest open arms and provided some of the tastiest natural food I have been lucky to taste for a good while. Each dish, of which I had five, had very distinctive, full flavours and once you taste the food and experience the friendliness of the owner, the surroundings, which are basic are forgotten.
I have to say that this was such a wonderful surprise and I advise to be brave and enter what may be to some, foreign world, but you will be pleased that you did.
