All In London Review

We were charmed by the interior of this sweet French bistro

Review Image
Lordship Lane is a fairly bucolic street for South London but despite its delis and hip pizza restaurants nobody would mistake its charms for the cobbled alleys of Le Marais - unless they stumbled on Le Chardon perhaps? Behind a low hanging awning and past a pair of terrace tables, Dulwich has its own slice of classic Parisian style. A restaurant/bistro, Le Chardon goes to lengths to stick out, dressing itself in beautiful tiles, mirrors and vintage street signs. Elegant is the word and we were just about completely charmed by the only ever so slightly clichéd French theme.

However, as Gordon Ramsey is quick to advise, beware the wide-ranging menu. Le Chardon is filled with bistro classics like coq au vin, lamb shank, orange & honey glazed duck and steak tartar, which was slightly worrying. As it turns out, the food is more than adequate. Our moules mariniere was a fresh, rich portion, seasoned perfectly and accompanied by French fries. What wasn’t so nice was having the manager (?) leaning on the ledge behind us filling out paperwork – while the rest of the restaurant lay empty – for the entire duration of our meal. This uncomfortable lack of awareness put a dampener on the entire experience. A shame because the lunchtime set menu is great value.

Reasonably priced from the food to the wine list, Le Chardon does a lot right and despite our own iffy – possibly one-off – experience, we would recommend giving it a go, especially since it offers an alternative to the well-trodden path of chicken wings, pizza and burgers that have taken over the food scene.
