Don't really surport the other reviewer's comments but who am l? everybody is entitle to their own opinion. The good thing about the food served is that its made fresh. You don't expect two people to cook and taste the same, or do you?

Being of African descent and with a Nigerian husband I think it is OK for me to say that this restaurant is strictly for other African's. There is no effort to explain the menu (or service style) to the unsuspecting non-African and if I were them I would probably feel somewhat alienated. They decided to frost the glass in the windows so that being outside you feel you should stay there and when you go in you are not sure if you should be in there.

It is not unusual for them not to have something that is on the menu - sometimes even the jollof rice has run out and, well, that should be a staple. The best thing there is the moi-moi (pronounced my-my) which I would strongly recommend to anyone who enjoys their food. Steamed in a banana leaf it is a spicy bean cake and this restaurant is better at making it than others in the area. So pick up your courage, ignore the stares, and go in and ask for a moi-moi to take away. (And hope they have it - just after 1pm seems like a lucky time for that).

Hubby occassionally gets other stuff, like jollof and meat, but after trying a few things like Egusi I now steer clear, settling for the moi-moi. Don't be surprised if the person serving you can't remember what you asked for or you have to ask them what you owe after which they will then ask you what you had so they can add it up (in their head). Circular conversations are the norm and the concept of customer service is, basically, non-existent.

Could be a lot better, in fact, African food deserves a better restaurant than Sweet Mother. It used to be the Goan Restaurant which was a lot more accesible (you could see through the windows!) and the menu was fathomable for the non-initiate. This one is a club for invited members. But ignore that and go get the moi-moi at less than £3.00 a cake. And then get out of there quick!
