All In London Review

Wanting to escape the usual hustle and bustle... you'll be very pleasantly surprised.

Wanting to escape the usual hustle and bustle of the very young things enjoying themselves in the centre of Kingston and by the riverside on a Friday night I popped in here and was very pleasantly surprised.

To be honest, I had only heard from friends about the place when they had gone as part of a group for a company’s Christmas meal – so I wasn’t really expecting much. And walking past Kingston train station and going under a rather dodgy arch beneath the railway and the surrounding nasty pavement with traffic thundering past didn’t bode well. And the blue twinkling fairy lights in the window (and a neon sign) didn’t make me feel too excited although it did look a bit posh (by Kingston standards) inside.

But we were warmly greeted by a truly beautiful Thai waitress who had a lovely quiet voice and impeccable manners. We were then shown into the restaurant which was very spacious and airy and modern. It felt very modern although the chairs were large, carved and traditional and there were tasteful elephant wood carvings on most of the walls.

For starters we selected dumplings and tempura prawns. OK. This isn’t very Thai but it was what we fancied. The dumplings were firm and tasty and served with a suitable dip. The prawns were large and the batter nice and light. Loved the carved carrot roses and salad garnish.

For our main course we shared some green chicken curry (creamy and not too hot), prawns with glass noodles ginger and broccoli (nice but would have liked more broccoli as it was really something else), rice with egg and prawns and noodles and bean sprouts. Good sized portions that were all well presented. And well cooked. All the while the manager kept an eye on everyone in the place – which meant that the service was excellent.

We only had a couple of glasses of wine which were perfectly chilled although we were a bit disappointed that the dessert menu was mostly Movenpick ice creams – but we were full from our savouries so didn’t mind too much.

Whilst we were a couple of girls on a Friday night out, it wasn’t super busy and there was plenty of space but it certainly wasn’t empty. There were quite a few couples and one or two groups. It was pleasantly busy but it was easy to have a conversation without the ambient noise getting in the way.

The bill came to £44 which we thought was reasonable considering the high quality of the food, the lovely staff and the wonderful interior.

Good Thai food at a reasonable price. Four of us went for dinner here on a Saturday night in January 2009. Service was a little slow, but worth the wait as the food was very good. The price of food and wine was very reasonable - bottles of wine started at £10. The vegetarian selcection is excellent, with at least 15 main courses. Recommended if you want a fairly relaxed and casual evening out.
