All In London Review

Poor food from this City bar

Review Image
Crab Tavern on Broadgate Circle is heaving on the night we visit. The music is loud, the 'crabtinis' are flowing, and the girls sitting next to us are on a Kim Kardashian-style selfie mission. Elsewhere there are loud groups which could easily be mistaken for stag dos, but it's just another Thursday night after work in the City, aka the new Friday.

Onto the food. This is their first London site, the other being in Dubai. The food is West Coast- inspired, so there's plenty of seafood on the menu. We get a sharing platter of appetisers with pork belly ribs that were probably good before they were slathered in a ketchup-like sauce, and soft shell crab and black pepper squid that are hard to tell apart with their over-generous salting and burnt coating. There's also corn on the cob served on slices of toasted corn bread, an odd pairing because the hard cob isn't edible.

The Shrimp Mac ‘n’ Cheese Toastie pairs two of London's hippest food choices together, but it's disappointing. The macaroni is bland, there's hardly any shrimp and the bread is on the charred side of grilled. The Crab & Waffle is another combination that reads marvellously on paper, but cold shredded crab with guacamole has been plonked on a frozen waffle - its machine-cut edges clearly visible.

The crabtinis mentioned before are fairly good though. The name may be best suited to an episode of Sex and the City, but a hefty serving of vodka with rhubarb syrup and violet liqueur makes for a pretty inebriating drink. It's a good job because the food is poor, although as a city bar with 'ladies drink free' nights it serves its purpose.
