Take a seat, order a (fine) cocktail and wait for the celeb spots to roll in. And we're not talking C-list here, we're talking your Kevin Spaceys, your Sean Beans, your Cate Blanchetts...

All In London Review

Refuel Bar at the Soho Hotel

Review Image
It may be marked with a rather naff ‘hotel bar’ type name, but if you ignore Refuel Bar and just call it Soho Hotel you can really get into this one.

Located on the ground floor of the aforementioned Soho Hotel, the bar is a charming mixture of chintzy luxury. Marble tables sit alongside plush bench sofas and a relaxed, yet considered soundtrack drowns all. However, amongst all this there is that strange Pizza Hut meurel that you remember from childhood trips to the buffet, which haunts the bar in a sweetly odd kind of way. Then there’s the huge bronze cat on your way in – if you cant dif this then you’re in the wrong hotel bar.

Hence the reason Refuel is a little stuffy. It conjures images of marketing suits and fat cats trying a tipple on the town, but the Soho Hotel is nothing like this, in short, it’s just ‘cool’… somehow.

The cocktails are good way to judge a bar on how serious it is about quality and here you’ll find that £15 – although expensive – buys you more than a seat in a stylish hotel bar in the heart of Soho, it buys you a great cocktail. The Old Fashioned’s here are worthy of particular praise. It’s a sipping kind of place, designed for intimacy and a large touch of sexy.

It attracts a Soho crowd, which means a bit of everything and you can even expect to encounter the odd celebrity or two. Simple bar snacks are available but there is a restaurant that takes care of the majority of the sustenance. Stick to the cocktails, find a dim, cosy corner and… refuel.

Every night should be cocktail night

Refuel at Soho Hotel isn’t all about celebrity spotting and post West-End shopping drinks. Its menu focuses on classics that are served with skill. Their Old Fashioned is a particularly pleasing blend and if you just so happen to end up sipping one next to an A-lister, then, it is what it is.

The Soho Hotel is one of those places where anyone can come over all exclusive as a flight of fancy pushes them through the doors towards the £15 cocktails that always impress. Sean Bean will probably sit next to you and regale you with old Sharpe stories (again…) or you might even get what’s known in the game as a ‘Hollywood’, like Josh Hartnett. You just never know.

Glamour and celebrity go hand in hand at Refuel Bar at the Soho Hotel. Relaxed yet knowingly desirable, the bar is split into a formal dining area and an informal lounge where the cocktails flow.

If you want a little decadence and occasion without going for something as uptight as The Savoy then try the Refuel Bar.

I visit every Christmas if I can and how festive it makes me feel. Cocktails are STEEP at around £15 but for a one-off it never fails to deliver the required buzz.
