Song Que Cafe is an authentic Vietnamese restaurant serving traditional dishes, with a takeaway service available.

All In London Review

Song Que Cafe surely serves the best pho on Kingsland Road - and that's not an opinion we give lightly.

Having become quite the connoisseurs of the Kingsland Road Vietnamese food scene, imagine our surprise when we discovered that even the famous are getting in on the act – and choosing wisely! Russel Brand and Jemima Khan’s recent date on the Pho Mile threw Song Que Café into the pages of national newspapers. ‘How could these two wealthy A-listers slum it in a £6-a-dish Vietnamese restaurant in Hackney?’ they asked. Clearly, what the newspapers don’t know is that this area – and Song Que Café in particular – is the place to find the best Vietnamese food in London.

Song Que is a striking green and yellow building perched on a corner of Kingsland Road, which gives it good views out across the street from two sides. Big windows, simple seating and a clean, simplistic approach to its décor make it a comfortable place to sit down for a meal.

Serving authentic Vietnamese cuisine at reasonable prices is a common theme in the restaurants down this street but Song Que stands out thanks to the quality of its pho. The noodle soup dishes take their broth seriously. Calling to mind the quality of some of the broths we recently found in Soho’s new ramen joints, the depth of flavour is impressive. Salty, rich and spicy soup is accompanied by your choice of noodles, meat and leaves. We sample the hot and sour with beef flank along with the classic pork and prawn pho. The hot and sour is naturally spicier but each has a kick that makes it unnecessary to add the extra fresh chilli that comes on the side. We also order the chilli squid to accompany the pho and find it just as tasty as the broth. Crispy, soft flesh seasoned with salt, pepper and chilli – there’s a reason why this is an unequivocal pick at every Vietnamese meal.

The alcohol policy is cloudy here. Sometimes the staff accepts the bringing of a bottle but at other times it seems keen to distance itself from that policy. The restaurant itself supplies a concise wine list along with a small range of Vietnamese beers.

Brighter and more spacious than many of its neighbours, Song Que Café is a relaxing, sociable place to eat excellent Vietnamese food. Not to mention a restaurant with celebrity endorsement.

Who can resist oodles of noodles?

Out of all the Vietnamese restaurants on Kingsland Road, Song Que stands out as the best. Pho is cooked in rich broths and dishes are cheap, making this one of East London’s top eateries in terms of value for money.

Good food at bargain prices

An AIL favourite, Song Que Café is one of the best no-frills Vietnamese restaurants on Kingsland Road. Stick to their excellent pho, bring your own booze and your bill will be peanuts. Not that the starters and main curries aren’t worth spending more on.

Great eats, on the cheap...

One of Kingsland Road’s many Vietnamese noodle joints, and also one of the best. There’s a vast menu with many different variants of noodle stir fries and soups, as well like herby shredded pork wrapped in rice paper, chargrilled quail and spare ribs. Take your own booze and a meal will cost you less than a trip to the cinema.

The pho's here are probably the best I've tasted along this strip - or anywhere really. The hot and sour reminded me of the Ramen at Bone Daddies - something about the rich flavour.

Fast service, relaxed and friendly. Will definitely be back to Song Que!
