A simple Vietnamese restaurant that puts its fine food above all else.

Mare Street doesn’t have quite the array of choice in Vietnamese restaurants as Kingsland Road but quality counts over quantity. Green Papaya is one of our favourites. Simple, friendly and quiet – the only change in the place since the rapid gentrification of Hackney over the last five years has been the addition of a dining bar. Beyond that ramen bar flourish it is the same independent, basic Vietnamese restaurant that puts its food above all else.

The menu is shorter than most but also seems to favour a different take on Vietnamese cuisine. There are still phos – we recommend the pho bo tai for its stunning rare beef and light, clean broth – but there is more emphasis on delicate meat, vegetable and noodle dishes. The crispy squid is always a good benchmark of quality and at Green Papaya it is light, fluffy and full of flavour. But the purple basil dipping sauce it comes with sets it apart with its rich, spicy zest.
Authentic Bun dishes are also amazing. The Thit Lon is a dish of spicy, sweet thinly sliced pork belly covered in shallots, peanuts, pickles and lettuce on a bed of rice vermicelli and is easily one of the best Vietnamese dishes we’ve tried. Washed down with two bottles of Saigon beer each, the bill came to £38.00 with service, which puts it among Hackney’s best cheap eats.
