What do newsreader Anna Ford and adventurer Ben Fogle have in common? They’re both members of the Royal Geographical Society, the professional body for geographers. The charity-funded organisation was founded in 1830 with the aim of supporting research and expeditions. In its early days it funded field trips to colonial Africa, the polar regions and India, aiding famous explorers like Livingstone and Shackleton.

The society’s Exhibition Pavilion is open to the public from Monday to Saturday, often displaying photographs from its own collections. The remainder of the building can be visited during the annual Open House Weekend.
