What Oxford Street is to high street shopping, Savile Row is to men’s tailoring; this is where to go if you wish to drop thousands of pounds on a bespoke suit. The street was first built in the 18th century as an extension of the Burlington Estate, and is named after Lady Dorothy Savile, the wife of the 3rd Earl of Burlington. Tailors’ shops didn’t establish themselves here till the early 19th century, and while the number of tailors has greatly reduced in recent years you can still find outlets from Ozwald Boateng, Gieves & Hawkes, Hardy Amies and Richard James. The world’s best dressed men are customers of these stores, including Bryan Ferry, Jude Law and a host of Hollywood stars, politicians and royals. The quasi-legendary grey suit Cary Grant wore in Hitchcock’s North by Northwest was made by Kilgour, located at number 8.
