In 1993 teenager Stephen Lawrence was tragically stabbed to death in a racially motivated attack. Both the killing and the incompetently handled police inquiry led to a campaign that inspired changes in the law, which meant that suspects could be tried for a crime a second time if new evidence was found.
The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust was founded in 1998. In 2008, the trust unveiled a conference and education centre designed by the award-winning architect David Adjaye OBE. The aim of the centre is to provide office space and facilities for businesses while raising funds for the charity, which helps young people from disadvantaged backgrounds into employment. There’s a computer room, meeting room and a lecture room fitted with audio visual equipment. Cheaper rates are available for members.
