The Crypt Gallery

Gallery spaces tend to be on the minimalist side, with plain white walls to show off the artists’ work. Not so at The Crypt Gallery, where there’s atmosphere by the bucket load before you even factor in the art. With brick walls, alcoves and dramatic spotlighting, the Crypt is cavernous and dark, and if that’s not enough to spook you bear in mind the site was used for coffin burials during the first half of the 19th century - there are over 500 people laid to rest here. The space was also used as an air raid shelter during both World Wars, but since 2002 it’s been a functioning gallery, hosting contemporary art exhibitions, book launches and performances. If you like religious architecture, the church is a great example of the Greek revival style, modelled on the ancient temples of Athens.
