Where: Johnson's Island Artists
In the outer reaches of West London, the neighbourhood of Brentford is home to a well-kept secret: a quirky, picturesque artists' community atop an island in the Grand Union Canal. There are 16 studios where a variety of creators work, from painting and writing to hat-making and sculpture.
The surroundings are pretty too, with lush, full-bodied trees straddling the canal, and brightly coloured narrowboats. Several times a year the island hosts open days where you can meet the artists and visit their studios.
