Explore people's homes over the last 600 years

The old Geffrye Museum showcases how we lived.

Where: Museum of the Home

The Museum of the Home — known as the Geffrye Museum until 2021 — gives visitors a glimpse into how London homes evolved between 1600 and the 21st century. Focused on domestic life in the inner city, it remains the only museum of its kind in the UK.

Housed in former 18th century almshouses in Hoxton, the museum showcases typical fixtures and fittings of each era, providing a visual history of how Londoners' lifestyles have changed, from typical leisure activities (see popular board games before the arrival of TV and early hifi systems) to people's use of their gardens and their designs have changed over the centuries. The museum is free to visit and has a shop and cafe onsite; there is also a library ideal for researchers and students.
