Where: New Malden
You might be surprised to know that New Malden, a suburb in south west London next to Kingston, has the biggest number of Korean expats in Europe. It all began when the UK’s Ambassador of South Korea moved to Wimbledon in the 1960s. The influx of immigrants that followed found New Malden cheaper however, so they decided to settle here.
Thanks to them there is now a huge array of restaurants and supermarkets specialising in kimchi (spicy fermented veg) and bulgogi (marinated grilled meats). If you want a real taste of Korean food without the airfare we highly recommend a trip to this neighbourhood. Our highlights include Su La and Cah Chi, both excellent for barbecued meats.
