Where: St Mary le Bow Church
Although less famous nowadays, the phrase "born within the sound of Bow Bells" was once the accepted definition of a Cockney. The bells themselves are located within St Mary le Bow Church in Cheapside, and as long as you could hear the bells you were within the London's boundary before the capital expanded beyond the City. T
hey ring every 15 minutes as the clock strikes the quarters of the hour, there is an additional toll before daily services, as well as change ringing on special occasions, where each of the 12 bells swings 360 degrees and is rung by a different person. The church was designed by Christopher Wren and is therefore worth a visit for fans of historical architecture.
To watch the bells ringing, an artform in itself, check the church's website for details of their livestreams.
