Where: Beckton Alps
, off Barking Road
For some this may be an unlovable stretch of the Docklands, however fans of industrial, semi-apocalyptic landscapes will enjoy the view from Beckton Alps, so-called because once upon a time there were plans to turn this hill into an indoor ski slope. The elevation is due to the rubbish heap accumulated from the old gas works, however this has since been covered in grass and is rather more sanitary than it may have been in the past.
Scenes from Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket were filmed here, but most importantly the view from here gives a good impression of what the entire Docklands area used to look like before the skyscrapers and luxury apartment blocks moved in.
