Go to an auction

Like e-bay, without the feedback. Great Sotheby-er A+++

Where: Sotheby’s, Christie’s, Greasby’s

If you enjoy the thrill of bidding on Ebay, why not step it up a notch by visiting an auction house? The top ones are of course the world-famous Christie’s and Sotheby’s, both of which specialise in art that sells for squillions, and watching a room full of wealthy collectors battling it out for a rare Picasso is a fascinating experience.

If you want to do some actual bidding however and you don’t happen to have a trust fund going spare, you can try a police lost & found auction or a liquidation auction, where the contents of offices or retail premises are sold off. Lastly, there’s bankruptcy and repossession auctions, the most unethical but also the ones where you’re most likely to pick up a gem. Check out Greasby’s for quirky stuff like suits of armour and John Pye for commercial items, such as the recent sale of Phones4U mobiles and accessories.
