Treat yourself to something home-cooked and handmade

back to basics

Where: Brixton Market, Windrush Square

Brixton is another of those neighbourhoods that's being swept up in the gentrification tide, with all manner of trendy places serving artisan coffees, grower champagnes and French cheeses. But on Windrush Square there's a small but perfectly formed little market selling homemade cakes (we tried a deliciously rich, gluten-free chocolate cake, and slices of orange and rosemary sponge), and jerk stews, as well as handmade jewellery and bags. The traders are all independent - so food is prepared in their home kitchens and items are made by hand.
