Originally constructed between 1833 and 1835, the Welsh Harp and its surroundings covers an area of around 170 hectares which is largely wild in nature including water, marshes, grassland and trees. In the 1960s, due to its status as one of the most important bird breeding areas in Southern England, the area was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Since then the area has continued to flourish as an oasis for local wildlife; the reservoir attracts and sustains much bird and wildlife as well as becoming a valuable recreational area for locals and visitors to the area.
