Westminster City Council is due to unveil two new works by the Italian artist Aron Demetz in St James’ Square Gardens on Thursday 20th June. This famous London space has previously exhibited work by some of the world’s most eminent cultural figures including Jeff Koons and Paul McCarthy. Reaching over four metres in height, Demetz’s Heimat and Burning Man will be on display at St James’s Square until December 2013.

Demetz’s works in St James’ Square Gardens depict imposing human figures that are literally and metaphorically ‘rooted in nature’. Initially working in wood before being cast in bronze, Demetz uses this material to highlight both the harmony and conflicts that exist between man and nature. These statues are not only a reflection of human emotion but hark back to far more primitive origins of the first interactions between people and their surroundings. The associations that the artist evokes through the traditional and natural qualities of wood help him to achieve a spirituality rarely seen in this age of digital and synthetic materials.

Demetz’s sculpture was recently exhibited at Gazelli Art House in Mayfair to great critical acclaim. By bringing the works out of the gallery and into a broader setting it will allow a larger audience to engage with Demetz’s work whilst also contextualising his outdoor pieces with the landscape provided.
