A new play about jazz pianist Thelonious Monk, and his lifelong friend Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter
Sat 3rd August, 2–4.30pm
A chance for theatre professionals, artistic directors, producers and investors to see a first outing of this exciting and ambitious new work, to witness its potential and, we hope, help us along the road to a full production. If you're interested in coming, then please RSVP on Facebook or by email to [email protected].
North of the Sunset is an intense exploration of the life and genius of Thelonious Monk, as seen through the eyes of his great friend and patron Pannonica “Nica” de Koenigswarter, using Monk’s music and tracing the line of their lifelong friendship.
Inspired by his work on Theatralia's Misterioso at Riverside Studios in 2009, David Walter Hall has created his own distinctive take on this fascinating slice of jazz history, focusing on the relationships between Nica, Monk and his wife Nellie, in intimate scenes of friendship, love and frustration.
Renowned UK jazz pianist, composer and broadcaster Julian Joseph will play the part of Thelonious Monk, taking on a challenging dual role as actor and musician. Tamsin Shasha, who played Nica in Misterioso, will return to the role in its new incarnation. Angela Koo will play Nellie Monk.
A future production of the play might also feature a flexible ensemble of musicians, ranging from a trio of bass and two horns up to a full big band, depending on the venue and budget. The reading will feature the Cockpit's piano alone, with scratch arrangements, and the play will be performed with scripts in hand for the benefit of an invited audience. This is the very first chance to see a work that has incredible pedigree and potential.
