How far would you go for love? If you’d do anything for them, would you do… anything?

Neil LaBute’s brilliant dark comedy drama about love, obsession and art opens at the Arcola this winter, delving into the bleakest shades of morality with all of its blistering and gut-wrenching consequences.

Set in a small university town in the American Midwest, join two girls and two guys as they get screwed and screwed over. The play follows four young students as they become emotionally and romantically involved with each other. Confident Evelyn meets shy Adam and embarks on a passionate relationship where she begins to ‘sculpt’ Adam into a more attractive human being. Only at the end of the play do we learn the reasoning for these changes and their consequences.

What is love? What is art? What is real? Both heart-breaking and hilarious, The Shape of Things examines the lengths we will go to for acceptance, the lies we can tell in our most intimate moments and the meaning of art. Exploring themes of the nature of art and moral responsibility, the play asks how far is too far when the exploitative nature of the artist is revealed.

Samuel Miller, director, commented: ‘It's incredibly exciting to direct this modern classic. LaBute's language veers from sparkling comedy to powerful drama in a heartbeat and to be working on this wonderful play with an equally incredible cast is a director's dream.’

A modern day cautionary tale by one of the world’s most acerbic and breathtakingly brilliant writers, directed by Samuel Miller and designed by takis.
