Cahit Baylav from Turkey [violin]
Najib Coutya from Lebanon ['oud]
Peyman Heydarian from Iran [santur]

Introduced by Ed Emery

An evening of music in Hijazkar mode. With a post-show discussion with the musicians.

GENERAL PRESENTATION:

The MAQAM system of modal scales is the basis of much of the music of the Islamic world. A complex musical system which is infinitely rewarding to those who know its ways.

Since 2010 the "Maqam Project @ SOAS" has organised a number of concerts and workshops focusing on particular modes within the Maqam tradition (Hijaz, Rast, Saba, Usshaq).
