I Metamorthisise ergo sum - Work by Robert Briggs

‘I Metamorthisise ergo sum’ is the first solo show by Goldsmith University recent graduate Robert Briggs.

Evolution and survival are dominant themes in Briggs’ work.
Following the passing of a close family member, the artist started to explore the relationship between life and death by looking at what lives or grows out of dead matter.

In fact, many of the drawings and sculptures in the show reflect on the desire for perpetual life. In his practice Briggs explores the human body and its relationship to its surroundings. He is particularly interested in the possibility of human/animal hybrids as the result of genetic experimentation, the desire for body modification, and even evolutionary necessity.

One of the sculptures in the exhibition is called ‘Grass Man’ : a crude representation of the body, fashioned from tights packed with compost, non-human yet alive in the strictest sense.

Robert’s works engage with a broad range of practices including watercolour, horticulture and textiles, often employing unconventional materials. Through his meticulous approach, Robert creates an uneasy tension between savage humour and pathos.
